Setting The Standard — Session 08

Assessing Learning

Dylan Wiliam's formative assessment, embedded in everyday teaching rather than bolted on at the end of it.

This session explores the principles of effective formative assessment, drawing heavily on the research of Professor Dylan Wiliam. Participants examine how assessment should be embedded within everyday teaching to identify misconceptions, monitor progress and inform instructional decisions.

The module focuses particularly on establishing clear learning intentions and success criteria, and engineering effective classroom discussions, questioning and learning tasks that generate meaningful evidence of learning. Practical strategies help teachers use assessment to adapt teaching and improve student outcomes.

By the end of the session, participants will understand how formative assessment becomes a powerful tool for improving learning rather than simply measuring it.

Nine sessions. One standard of excellence.

Setting The Standard is our CPD programme for teachers, accredited by The CPD Standards Office — nine sessions, 27 masterclass videos, in English and Arabic.
